"The Dictator" is funny, in addition to being obscene, disgusting, scatological, vulgar, crude and so on. Having seen Sacha Baron Cohen promoting it on countless talk shows, I feared the movie would feel like deja vu. But no. He establishes a claim to be the best comic filmmaker now working. And in a speech about dictatorships, he practices merciless political satire. It makes an excellent doubleheader with Great Dictator; a Polish acting troupe in occupied Warsaw disguise themselves as Nazis—including Benny as Hitler himself—in order to escape. Both funny and quite poignant, especially given the time it was made, and even more so considering lovely co-star Carole Lombard died in a plane crash 2 months It would probably have been a pretty funny hour - if you like that sort of thing. The major criticisms being thrown at The Dictator is claims of racism (just like Borat and Ali G, not to mention claims of homophobia at Bruno) and whether the film mocks Middle Eastern stereotypes, or whether it actually attacks those who impose the stereotypes. The thing is, I did actually like this movie. I thought it was quite funny at times, and had an interesting story. I just struggled a bit. I mean, I knew what I was getting into watching a Sacha Baron Cohen movie, I just found a little bit too much of it not-that-funny-still-kinda-insensitive.
